A progression of back flushes cleanses the caught minerals and flushes them out of the system. During the water flow inside the tank, sodium and potassium chloride are exchanged with resistance, causing minerals to transform into soft water. The salts are renewed in the pitch bed during the cycle, and the basis is set once more.

Water Pressure: The Springwell water system will guarantee you no drop in water pressure if used for more than seven bathrooms. While the competitor’s standard GPM for 1-3 bathroom units is 6-7 GPM, Springwell water filtration offers 20 GPM for more than seven-bathroom teams.

Best Water Softener System For Arizona: Buying Guide

1) Should you use a salt-based or salt-free water softener in Arizona?

Not many people will tell you that a salt-based system is way more capable of softening water than a salt-free water softener? Because a salt-based water softener uses an ‘Ion Exchange Process’ in which they replace hard-causing ions (mainly calcium and magnesium) with potassium or sodium ions. Even if your water has a hardness level between 120-125 GPG, a salt-based water softener can soften it for you.

On the other hand, a salt-free water softener (also known as a water conditioner) does not actually remove hard minerals from water. It only diminishes the adhesive nature of hard water and thus prevents limescale buildup. That’s why a salt-free system works where the water hardness level is below 60-70 GPG.

Because Arizona’s water is extremely hard, our first recommendation would be to go for a Salt-based water softener.

2) How much should you spend on a water softener in Arizona?

If you choose to buy a well-built capable salt-based system, it can cost you from 1000-4000 dollars. Of course, the price depends on the grain capacity. The larger the water, the softener the costlier it is and vice versa. And if you choose to buy a salt-free system, it can cost you around 120-1500 bucks.

While you are calculating the total cost, don’t forget to add the installation cost of around 500-600 dollars.

3) How to select the right-sized water softener for Arizona?

Figuring out the right grain-sized water softener might be a confusing process, especially for a first-time buyer. A water softener that is too small for a home will struggle to keep up with your daily water demand and will wear out faster. On the other hand, an oversized water softener will cost you more money. Because it has a higher price tag and associated maintenance cost.

To choose the perfect-sized water softener you have to figure out your “Weekly Water Softening Requirements”. Weekly water softening requirements depend on three factors:

  • Daily water usage,
  • The hardness level of incoming water
  • Iron particles in water.

How much water do you use weekly? According to US standards, a person needs 75 gallons of water per day or (75*7) 525 gallons of water per week.

What is the hardness level (grain per gallon) of water in your home? If you get water from a municipal water provider, you can find your water hardness level in the yearly water quality report. And if you get water from a private well, you will need to test the water to find out its hardness.
Note: water hardness information can be reported in PPM (Parts per Million), Mg/L (Milligram per Liter), or GPG (Grains per Gallon). GPG is the industry standard way to discuss water hardness.
If the hardness level is reported in PPM or Mg/L, you will have to convert it to GPG (grains per gallon).

17.1 Parts per Million= 1 Grain per Gallon.
17.1 Milligrams per Liter = 1 Grain per Gallon.

Do you have iron in your water? If yes, how much? Iron particles steeply increase the water hardness level. If the water in your house contains iron, you will need to correct the water hardness level. For every 1.0 PPM of Mg/L of iron present in water, 3 GPG of hardness needs to be added to the total hardness value.

The Arizona Water Quality Division confirms that municipally supplied city water in Arizona doesn’t contain any iron. But private well water may or may not contain iron that can not be confirmed without testing.

Now let’s do a math,

Let’s assume, You have 4 people in your house, and you rely on a private well for water. The hardness of the water is 12 GPG and there are 2 Mg/L of iron particles present in your water.

So, your weekly water demand is = 4 people × 525 gallons = 2100 gallons.
Water hardness = 12 GPG
Correction of water hardness due to iron particles = 2 Mg/L × 3 GPG = 6 GPG

So, your weekly water softening requirement is = weekly water demand × (Water hardness+ Correction of water hardness due to iron particles)
= 2100 gallons × (12 GPG + GPG)
=2100 gallons × 18 GPG
= 37800 grains

So, a water softener that can remove 37800 grains or more is suitable for your specific needs.

4) Where does Arizona get its water?

On average, Arizona uses 7 million acre-feet of water every year (An acre-foot is 325,851 gallons.). Arizona’s water usage is mainly divided into 3 categories: industrial, agriculture, and municipal. Accounting to the Arizona Department of water resources, 36% of total Arizona’s water supply comes from the Colorado River. 41 % comes from groundwater, 18% comes from in-state rivers and the rest 5% comes from reclaimed water.

where-does-arizona-get-its-water
Where Does Arizona Get its Water?

Groundwater: Earth’s gravity continuously pulls surface water deep into the ground. Because of this force, surface water flows through layers of sand, and rock. And, ultimately gets stored in gigantic ballon-shaped empty spaces called aquifers. These aquifers are situated 750-1000 feet under the ground. The Arizona water department uses thousands of deepwater wells to collect water from those aquifers.
Groundwater provides a major part of the water needed by Arizona. Out of 7 million, 2.8 million acre-feet of water comes from groundwater sources.

Colorado River: Colorado River is the second most important source of water for Arizona. The river is considered the lifeblood of southwestern states. It provides water to 7 states, including Arizona. Arizona gets about 2.2 million acre-feet of water from the Colorado River every year.

Surface Water: Due to high water demand, the Arizona state govt has built several reservoirs in in-state rivers. The most mention-worthy reservoirs are on the Salt, Verde, Gila, and Agua Fria Rivers. Combined, they provide 1.2 million acre-feet of water for Arizona. Although, the Arizona desert climate and harsh temperatures make it difficult for those reservoirs to hold water. That’s why the water supply from those resources varies from year to year and season to season.

Reclaimed water: reclaimed water refers to processed wastewater that can be used to irrigate crops, maintain wildlife areas and cool industrial machines, etc. The Arizona water department collects 0.3 million acre-feet of water from those processors every year.

5) Why does Arizona Have Extremely Hard water?

77% of the water used in Arizona comes from the Colorado River and underground aquifers.
The Colorado River is a thousand-mile river that starts its journey from the Rocky Mountains. From start to finish, the Colorado River’s water flows through several landscapes. Gets in contact with rock formations, mountain meadows, and whatnot. As the water flows through, it gets mixed with abundantly found minerals in nature like magnesium, calcium, uranium, manganese, etc. The same thing happens to groundwater when it flows underground.

Those minerals are responsible to make water hard. Since the Arizona water department collects hard water in the first place and does treat water for hardness, all of Arizona suffers from water hardness problems.

6) Is Arizona tap water safe to drink?

In general, Arizona tap water is considered. At least the water sent from the Arizona water purification plant doesn’t contain certain contaminants that are poisonous to human health. The Arizona Department of water resources uses 4 filtration systems to purify water to meet the standards set by the United States Environmental protection Agency ( EPA). Those filtration systems are:

water-filtration-process-of-the-arizona-department-of-water-resources
Water Filtration Process of The Arizona Department of Water Resources

Screening and Pre-sedimentation: Arizona water department removes large particles such as plant matter debris and other materials in this stage. These are abundantly found contaminants in river water:

Coagulation, Flocculation, and Sedimentation: In the second stage, they add ferric chloride (a chemical coagulant) to the water. Ferric Chloride forces tiny contaminants to cling together and settle at the bottom of the water basin.

Filtration: In this stage, clearer water from the basin gets sent through a fine poured filter for further purification.

Disinfection: Finally, the Arizona water regulatory authority adds some chlorine and fluoride to the water. Chlorine kills any microorganism that may or may not be present in the water after purification. It also prevents, future microbial growth in the water. And, the florid is added to the water to prevent tooth decay.

After completing these 4 stages, they sent water through massive waterlines to the city.

7) Even if it is safe, can you drink Arizona Tap Water?

One thing you have to understand is that the Arizona water department does not treat their water for odor, taste, and hardness. Because the water regulation act doesn’t regulate these aesthetic aspects of water.

Although completely safe for drinking, some people find Arizona tap water has a musty odor and a bitter taste.

The musty odor comes from the algae that usually grows in lakes and canals. Even after removing all those algae in the water purification process, they leave a musty odor in the water. The bitter taste comes from unwanted dissolved minerals in Arizona’s water.

Based on your personal taste, it might or might not be possible for you to drink water directly from the tap.

The Arizona water department is working to improve its water taste and water quality. Until they succeed, you can try using a carbon-based or a reverse osmosis water filter in your house.

8) What kind of water filter do we recommend to remove lead from Arizona’s tap water?

  • There are 2 kinds of water filters that can extract lead from water.
  • Carbon water filter
  • Reverse osmosis water filter

Carbon water filters are the most affordable water filters. They cost about 70-80 bucks and are pretty efficient in removing lead, chlorine, fluoride, and arsenic from water. The epic water pitcher is our favorite carbon-based water filter pitcher. You can check the water pitcher here.

Reverse osmosis is the most effective filtration system to this date. Almost every known water contamination can be removed by reverse osmosis processing. The RO water filter not only purifies tap water but also makes it taste good. They cost from 300-500 bucks. And if you are interested in getting one, check out waterdrop G2, a highly effective value-for-money reverse osmosis water filter.

9) Arizona water shortage: Will Arizona run out of water?

The water crisis is an invisible threat that is coming toward Arizona. Arizona is one of the hottest and driest states in the United States. It receives just 8-9 inches of rainfall each year. Most of the water Arizona uses comes from snowpack which melts in summer in distant mountains. Studies have already shown that water flow, towards Arizona through several rivers (including the big Colorado River) and canals, is getting lower each year.

Moreover, groundwater from aquifers is getting depleted. The Arizona department, now, digs deeper “Wells” to keep up with the water demand. All of these are symptoms that the state of Arizona will face a water crisis in the near future.

The Arizona water department is preparing for a draught in advance and securing new water supplies along the way. Hydrologists in Arizona water departments are creating operation models as though they are already in a period of drought. The Arizona state govt is implementing “Tough Water Laws” to reduce water wastage and ensure adequate water supply in the future.
Under Arizona’s Groundwater Management Act 1980, authorities have launched several “Water Conservation Programs” throughout the state. They are giving tax rebates for using water-efficient equipment and home appliances, launching free classes on “how to save water” etc.

Benefits of using a water softener in Arizona: Water Softener is an Investment

1) Protects Plumbing and Fixtures from Limescale: Hardness-causing minerals, like calcium and magnesium, have a tendency to stick with water pipes and fixtures. Little by little, they bond with each other and, over time, appear as a white, chalky, and hard substance. It can usually be found inside water pipes and other water sports such as toilet bowls, sinks, taps, bathroom tiles, etc.

All those scales prevent water flow and damage water pipes and fixtures. In extreme cases, it can eventually stop water from flowing throughout the house.

In situations like these, you may need to change the pipelines of your entire house. Which is something that can cost between 7000-10,000 dollars in the state of Arizona. A water softener can save you from all that trouble by softening hard water in the first place.
